The History of the Internet
The internet is a
series of linked computers. Within that internet is a hub where information can
be gathered and distributed throughout the world. This would be the World Wide
Web or more affectionately called “The Web”.
The internet
came into existence during the 1960s. With the advances in modern technology,
came the need and also the answer to the problem of getting information to more
people faster. Up until this time, regular mail or telephone was the mode of
communication informational transfers.
With the coming of
the internet and web, packets of information were now being sent all over the
world in a matter of seconds. This also led to teleconferences and meetings
with people participating in different hemispheres of the globe.
There are many
elements to the internet such as browsers, servers, switches, routers, modems,
and bandwidth just to name a few. These elements each have a level they reside
on to bring each packet of information from the world wide web down into
individual homes and wi fi hotspots.
Think how
differently our lives would be if the internet and web had not been invented.
People would still be waiting days for news that wasn’t local. They would not
be able to communicate as quickly to opposite ends of the earth. Large
corporations would not have the accessibility they have now for face to face
meetings in the spur of a moment through video uplinks.
In my opinion,
the internet is the single most important discovery in the history of the
world.
